IRONY

 

MEANING 1: (n.) use of words and expressions to show the contrast or the difference between the literal meaning and the intended meaning, used as a humorous device in literature

EXAMPLE SENTENCES:

  1. “Now this is luxurious”, she said in a voice filled with irony as she looked around the bare shack.
  2. O. Henry is famous for using irony and abrupt endings in his short stories.

 

MEANING 2: (n.) showing the inconsistence between the actual results achieved and the result expected from a chain of events 

EXAMPLE SENTENCES:

  1. The irony of holding a car wash to raise money for solar panels was not lost on anyone at school. 
  2. The fact that Bangladesh was able to defeat and ouster India from the Cricket World Cup was extremely ironical.

 

MEANING 3: (n.) pretending to be ignorant about something to point out the other’s misconceptions or faults by skilful questioning, also called Socratic irony

EXAMPLE SENTENCES:

  1. The professors used Socratic irony to tear apart the student’s report.
  2. The writer has used Socratic irony to explain the plot in the movie.
